Yes, and there are some old and bold wines!
I was asked last week in cellar door why anyone would stock old Pinot Noir wines. I replied that there were two reasons: One was that the wines were crap and wouldn’t sell. The other reason was that they were wines that have benefitted from long and careful bottle ageing. Three of the oldest are the 2000 Providence Miguet Reserve – trophy and gold medal winner as well as the only wine to win the National Gourmet Pages Pinot Noir Challenge – both sections (wine against wine and wine against food) TWICE! Another Tasmanian great, and possibly the best Pinot noir to come from the state is the 2000 Domaine-A Stoney “Reserve du Patron”. The 2001 Moorilla Reserve Pinot Noir is also a multi gold medal and trophy winning wine.
I have just opened a 2000 Miguet Pinot Noir in preparation for a Father’s Day dinner tonight. And I can assure you that age has not wearied it! A brilliant wine in its youth, the development and integration that the years have provided has not detracted from the deliciousness I recall when it was first released. The wines are priced at $100 (2000 Miguet); $160 (Reserve du Patron); and $85 (Moorilla 2001). These are not listed in the shopping trolly so give me a ring if you want some of this bliss.
